Dreidel, Chapter Three

1/ Why is it, the one time I make my excuses in advance for not replying to comments is the one time I actually reply to all of them?

2/ HTF did it get to be September already? Got my Seasonal Spuffy date and thought crap, that's only a couple of weeks away. (I didn't really think crap, but I don't want to expose you all to my potty mouthed inner monologue.) Then actually looked at the date, my God that's less than a week away. Where did the summer go? Why do I write so slowly? Was very nervous about signing up for a ficathon, though I really wanted to, 'cause I suck with deadlines, then I got caught up with writing Dreidel which wouldn't do for my contribution because it's half stolen and nowhere near finished, and half writing shorts because I have the kind of mind that wanders that way and now I don't even know which one I should try and finish. Why did I sign up for window A? A is such a stupid letter.

3/ My home computer is knackered. Every few days it will deign to work for a couple of hours then switch itself off without warning, this isn't really an impediment to writing for me because I'm a biro girl at heart (fountain pen, quill, whatever, the less technology the better), but I can't post scribblings. Turns out I was stupid to think I wouldn't have internet access at the moment, been staying in my Dad's flat in Kings Cross which they're trying to sell and if you don't mind braving the pushers and prostitutes there's all night internet access just round the corner. It's not the same. Great place for checking your email, not a good place for writing, especially if you tend to say things outloud without realising it if you get to concentrating too hard.

4/ Here's Chapter Four of Dreidel

Chapter Three )
constance_b: (Default)
Here's some of the stuff I stole from JustSue. That doesn't make her in any way to blame for this fic, send all law suits my way. If any actual lines have snuck in there that was by accident, but the whole setup for the next couple of chapters is lifted from her fic Buyer Beware.
I tweaked Chapter two a little, mostly in response to comments, to make it clearer and Buffy more sympathetic, but not enough that it needs rereading for this to make sense. In fact I'm still not happy with it, probably tweak it again next week. I wanted to have Buffy concerned and firmly not showing it and obviously I didn't get that across, now I still don't but it's clunkier. Thanks again to [livejournal.com profile] slackerace for continuing to beta even though I make up words. So yeah, here's Chapter Three.
Dreidel )

I'm going away for a very long weekend, unlikely to be online again for at least a week so forgive me if I'm even laxer about replying to comments than usual. I do read them, treasure them, and try to correct my fic accordingly.

It's longer than the first one...
Chapter One )
constance_b: (Default)
This fic was 'inspired' by Just Sue, so much so that it would count as plagiarism if she hadn't given me her kind permission to post it. I like to think of it as fanficcing her fanfic. Don't think I've stolen any actual lines but the overall idea, and a few of the details are hers, as is the overlapping POV in places. It's not really relevant to the first couple of chapters, I'll give details when I get to the bits I nicked. You can find her fic, Buyer Beware, here: http://redeem.dark-solace.org/

This is my also first try at writing plot, even a half stolen and barely existing one, unless you count 'Buffy and Spike get it on', and I'm not sure how much sense it makes. Hopefully it'll make some kind of sense eventually, not yet obviously, because this is only the first chapter and it's stupidly short. To be clear, everything that happened in Season Six is canon for this fic, and it starts maybe a week before Lessons.

The correct grammar belongs to [livejournal.com profile] slackerace, the title and quote belong to Don Mclean, as usual the rest of the credit goes to Joss Whedon.

Does anyone here listen to The Now Show? There was a typically hilarious season finale on Friday live from the Edinburg fringe. I'm guessing Radio Four isn't very big in America but you can download it as a podcast or listen for the next five days here:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/nowshow.shtml
Might not make a lick of sense but it's very funny.

I have no fic to rec because my home computer's gone belly up and I can't read any of the stuff I pasted. Keeps switching itself off and comes on with a blank screen, then every now and then will come on working perfectly, claiming it's 1997. My Father, who pretends to know about such things even though he's older than computers, said the video card is going, I don't even know what that means.
On the plus side, I've found an internet cafe without a filter that charges by the hour rather than the minute, think I'm just going to stay here until somebody reports me missing.

Oh, and I've been nominated for an award. At least my fic has, at the fang fetish awards. I'd put a button up but I'm too stupid... Very flattered though.

Seen quite a few entries on my flist the last couple of weeks about a kerfuffle, which is just a lovely word. I'm not really in the loop fandom gossip wise and I haven't had the online time to follow links and find the sources of the kerfuffles (look, it plurals) and I certainly don't want to get involved in other people's disagreements but I have a thing or too to say about reviews. I'll put it behind a cut because I'm kinda opinionated for a newbie.

short rant about the unnatural politeness of people in fandom )

So I want to make it clear: I love concrit. I also love flat out criticism, opinions that I don't share, opinions that I violently disagree with, arguing, sniping, insults, lurkers, swear words and whispered endearments. And Spuffy. I don't hold to the 'if you have nothing nice to say, keep your mouth shut' adage. ALL comments are welcome on this LJ. If you don't like my fic, say so, please, if you can spare the time to say why even better. Disagree with me, dislike me, I take offence at nothing and it makes the compliments all the sweeter when people feel free to really speak their mind.

Set in a more gentle Season Six, what might have happened if Buffy'd been less depressed and ashamed of her sexuality, and Spike hadn't been so damn impatient and determined to bring her over to the dark side. Set very firmly before they shagged, but after OMWF.
I know it's OOC, but how else do you get S6 fic that isn't depressing?

Just a few new links for my list of Spuffy Authors with their own site, the complete list can now be found in my memories, I'm afraid I'm still too stupid to link to it here.

Author Links )
I'm always looking out for new stuff to read, even if it's not new new. If your site isn't on the list it's because I haven't found it yet, all links are greatly appreciated.

And the best things I've read this fortnight. Again, most of them rereads and all Spuffy, just haven't had the time online to ferret out new stuff. Found a new internet cafe but it's quite a trek and they're not quite so child friendly.

Here's chapter five of Softer World, still with the same crappy title because I've yet to think of a better one. What it does have, courtesy of a beta from [livejournal.com profile] slackerace, is three correctly used semi colons. That's new. Never been beta'd before, it's very nice, I post this confident for once that my punctuation is correct and I don't have Buffy using any weird British phrases. So big thanks to Slackerace, and everyone else who's helped me with linking/formatting.

The first four chapters can be found here lj://memories/constance-b/, hopefully, I don't have a good record with LJ links.
Warning. There may be boinking in this chapter.

Chapter Five )

As ever I like my feedback spiced with criticism.

Help?

I usually write stuff the oldfashioned way, with a biro and a tatty notebook, in scraps. Then come back to it a couple of months later and cringe and then type it up better, so it gets a thorough rewrite. Then leave it a couple months more for a proofread cause it's hard to spot the typos when you've only just typed them and can remember how it should read. This method has yielded me precisely two fics worth posting, over a couple of years.

But that's an awfully slow way to write a WIP, so I've tried going straight to keyboard but without having the time lag to re-read more objectively I'm feeling awfully unsure about the quality of my writing.

What I'm working toward here is: a beta would be awfully useful. I know there's lots of sites that have a beta pool, is there a similar thing on LJ? Or is there anyone who reads this got some free time? I'd be happy to return the favour, assuming you don't write something yucky like Spander.

And seeing as I'm shamelessly begging assistance, how do I add to Memories? I know it can't be that hard, everyone on this site seems to have managed it and you can't all be geniuses (Genii?). I read the faq, even asked one, but I can't find my add to memories page.

Fic Recs

This is the list I wanted to post on Sunday, best Spuffy fic I've read this week. I've tried to restrict myself to new fic this week, or at least new to me, so it's more of a top seven.

Fic )

And Firefly? Blue Sun Room, where I go for most of my firefly fic, has been inaccessible to me and only just popped back up. So there's just one, a wip.
CABridges - When the Devil Drives
http://www.serenitymovie.org/browncoats/forums/index.php?showtopic=5424&st=0&gopid=232388&

Seen lots of references to other blog sites on LJ just recently, but I don't think I've ever seen a link to a Spuffy fic on one. Am I missing out? Is there swathes of fic I've not read yet away from LJ?
constance_b: (Default)
Found a new internet cafe, there's a live reggae band playing outside and it's so hot in here there is sweat pooling on my crappy plastic chair. Still can't post my list cause this crappy old computer says my floppy's not formatted.

So I've been amusing myself trying to read the last lot of Spuffy Award winners.

This may be a contentious opinion but some of them were so awful I couldn't read past the second chapter, never mind consider nominating them for an award. Why is it, with the exception of Anaross who bangs out long, beautifully written error free chapters with a speed that's frankly intimidating, that the worst writers are the most prolific?

If it wasn't for KCarolJ my day would have been completely wasted. Still love you. Write faster.

I think I'm going to move to London. Just for decent internet access. Though maybe it would be cheeper for me to just buy a new computer.

And carrying on with random little snippets of my day, I just googled BS Central Spuffy and got a link to my own journal. Weird.

AAARGH!

My internet cafe has closed down! I only bought a months membership last week and now the place is borded up. I'm at the coffee shop round the corner but it's hopeless and won't let me access anything, including my own journal! Most of my flist is coming up access denied and even if I could get at anything, this stupid computer has no floppy drive so I can't take any fic home to read. Most frustrating of all are the journals that are coming up but I can't look behind the cut, namely KCarolJ65 who has a new chapter of Blood runs thin up and I can't read it. Maybe she says crap in it, cause we all have to be protected from mild swear words.

I'm lost. I live in Oxford, the place is teeming with students and there is not a single place I can access LJ on a Sunday. Which is the only day I have without a toddler tugging at my skirt and trying to play with the mouse. And even on a weekday there's only a library, and I suspect it's going to have the same ridiculously overdone filter system as this stupid shop. Although at least they won't charge me three quid for the privelege of not being able to look at anything.

I had a list of fic recs to post, can't get them off the floppy, can't remember the links. Quinara has a lovely short up which I can't comment on because it won't let me access. It was very sweet, if you're reading Quinara. I love her style of writing, distinctive and descriptive with good attention to detail, and very subtle. Sorry I can't leave this comment on your journal. Guess you've used a swear word once to.

In RL, there has been a police van permanently stationed at the end of my road cause someone was threatened with a gun last week. I live in BlackBird Leys, a housing estate infamous in the early nineties for joyriders, the guns are new though, generally people just stab eachother. And my married and very creepy neighbour has been hitting on me. Tried avoiding him but my little girl loves his stepdaughter, and her trampoline, have to drag her past their house.

No point commenting on this entry, I can only look at my user info. I'm seriously pissed off.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] makd, [livejournal.com profile] avidrosette and [livejournal.com profile] cordykitten for the help with tags and italics. And you see how I made their names into LJ Icons (or users, links, whatever the proper term is)? I figured that one out by myself! Go Me!

When I say fic, I mean tiny little S6 snippet, with many lines stolen from the show.

I rewrote the end of Smashed so that they don't have sex. Christ knows why, now I come to think of it. I like the Smashed sex. The look on his face when she slides onto him... Wow, that's hot. And it's not in this fic.

Slightly Fractured )

Criticism and fulsome praise equally welcomed

Huge thanks to whoever nominated me at the Love's Last Glimpse awards. I'm going to take a wild guess and say KCarolJ65? Lovely end to my holiday. Haven't read any Spuffy for a fortnight, so not even recs this week. That's a lie, actually. I printed out Sharelle's Out of Joint, and Bogwitch's Working my Way because they'd both had updates and I read them both through from the beginning. Which was great fun for me, but you've all read those two, right?

I was trying to edit my WIP, take out the UnAmerican swearing and Britisms and add a few more personal pronouns, and I noticed LJ has taken out all of my italics. I've had a flick through the LJ faq but - really stupid with computers. Anyone know how I can put them back again?

I'm going on holiday tomorrow, Dawlish Warren, little coastal town that might not have public internet access. Here's an update for my list of Spuffy author sites. New links are under the cut below, and hopefully after that will be a link to the previous post which I'm going to update but this is new territory for me.

Spuffy Recs

Jun. 7th, 2006 01:56 pm

My little girl saw Big Ben at the weekend. On the bus yesterday there was a picture, advertising a trip to London, she started yelling look mummy, big clock, only she can't pronounce L's very well and a few people on the bus sniggered. Then she wanted to look at Daddy's tiny clock. I tried to correct her, say Daddy has a watch, big mistake, toddlers don't like being corrected. So she yelled at the top of her voice. 'No Mummy! Daddy has a tiny cock!' He'll not be getting that bus again.

Top ten fics for this week, again little of it fresh. Is anyone writing new stuff? Why can't seasonal Spuffy run all year?
