Europe is that same region as the UK (region 2). The US is region 1. You should have either bought the player as multi-regional or had it unlocked (my DVD was unlocked by Richer Sounds when I bought it, so I don't know how it is actually done, that would take you further research depending on your player). If you just bought your player off the shelf at say, Tesco or somewhere, then I reckon it's unlikely to play the US discs.
