We really don't swear nearly as much as british people in my experience. You'd never think that to listen to say, Lil' Kim or the average rapper but it does follow. In a lot of ways widespread profanity is very much a class issue; I've always assumed that it's part of the whole aggressive posturing that seems to be part of that subculture.

Which is not to say that americans don't swear, but that I've never found the language on Buffy to be wildly unusual.
