Excellent Dawn and Anya voices, again. Anya just wresting the spell from a dithering Buffy was wonderfully in character.
This exchange made me laugh: "You look silly," put in Anya, rising from her magic circle. "And slightly effeminate."
"She means girly," Dawn corrected. "And stupid." What a bitchy, adolescent thing to say, and I'm delighted that this chapter shows Dawn re-thinking her cruelty. Her warring emotions over this Spike were very nicely illustrated and in character.
This was an excellent passage, too: "Oh the joy to come. Xander hating Spike, Anya hating Xander. Dawn's tantrums were probably a kindness, breaking her in gently. If it wasn't for the torture she might have envied Spike his memory loss." I'm afraid Buffy's right and the tension to come has nothing on Dawn's little hissy fits.
This was another sharp, entertaining chapter, and the mystery of Spike keeps getting more twisted. Like Dawn and Buffy, I find his meekness jarring and wrong, but it's a wonderful read. I'm looking forward to wherever you're taking this.
