I don't think you should be morally obliged to answer every comment in depth at all... If someone is asking a question as part of their comment, i.e. "I am curious as to why you made x do y" then fair enough, it needs an answer. But if it is just a compliment, then there is nothing you can say but thank you. And if you get multiple comments all saying the same thing, then to me it seems really pointless just replying seventy five times with the same two words...
