You're doing a good job conveying this wary Spike. Buffy taking in his strangeness without a clue about The First is also well drawn. Neither knows how to act or react, and every statement is loaded...
I really liked the image of Spike patrolling in his stocking feet, just enjoying the freedom of being out and about. I also like how being bootless highlighted his vulnerability in my eyes. It rang true that Buffy's solicitousness would grate his already frayed nerves, and his statement "I'd do anything for you..." was perfect for rattling Buffy.
